General Course Details

Eligibility

Students will preferably have taken an introductory course in Shiatsu (evening class or introduction day), or have therapeutic experience from another field.

It may be possible for people to join the course as complete beginners, subject to an interview with one or more of the principal teachers.

Home Study (approximate/minimum amounts)

  • Year One: 8 hours per month
  • Year Two: 12 hours per month
  • Year Three: 15 hours per month

Assessment

Students are assessed throughout and at the end of each year-long course. Successful students will be awarded certificates at the culmination of each year.

Venue

Courses are taught in Edinburgh, in bright, warm, central venues.

Payment

Both new and mature students are welcome. Payment is made in the form of a non-returnable deposit prior to the start of each year in September, and thereafter in 2 installments or by monthly direct debit.

Attendance Criteria

Students are expected to attend all of the course.

If you do miss a weekend, you will be expected to take a one hour tutorial (at a cost of £30) per day missed. You will also be expected to find out about the homework and to get copies of the other students' notes so that you can catch up.

If you miss more than two weekends, you will need to have a chat with the teachers about continuation.

Continuation To Practitioner Level

The course hours of the Shiatsu School, Edinburgh, will count towards the 500 hours required to be eligible to apply to the Shiatsu Society for the MRSS (Member of the Register of the Shiatsu Society) assessment.

In addition to the hours of study required, those wishing to apply for MRSS assessment will be required to fulfil a number of other criteria such as having been a member of the Shiatsu Society for two years, and having professional indemnity insurance.

Your school will support you to fulfil the criteria.

Appeals Procedure

If you are unhappy with a decision taken by a course teacher, your first step should be to approach that teacher informally to discuss the decision.

If you are unsatisfied with the result you should put your complaint to the teacher in writing, and should receive a written response within one week.

If you are still unsatisfied, you can put your complaint in writing to either of the other two principal teachers, who should reply in writing within two weeks.

If you are still unsatisfied, you can write and request a meeting with all three principal teachers consider your complaint as a panel.

An independent third party may be called into the panel, if requested.

The decision of the panel will be final. The SSE will endeavour to deal with all complaints as sympathetically as possible.
